Neo-soul & R&B in Jakarta, meet Farrel Hilal.
Smooth like butter, with grooves that will mellow down every moment. Jakarta-based singer Farrel Hilal knows how to meet the expectations of delivering classic sounds with a modern delivery. We came across this rising new talent and were stopped in our tracks right away. Taking inspiration from pioneers such as Musiq Soulchild, as well as from national Indonesian legends like Glenn Fredly, Farrel’s contribution to the next generation of neo-soul might be nothing short of significant, as he sets the tone for a new generation of both Indonesian and international neo-soul. To introduce y’all to his work, we’ll focus our attention on the two tracks which we think deliver best.
I’m Just a Man
Let’s start with the oldest of the two. I’m Just a Man brings that late-night groove to every moment with its classic yet modern neo-soul and R&B energy. From the moment the drums kick in, the vibe is set. The tune is nothing else but smooth, with lyrics that are simple yet delivered in a sophisticated and grown way.

Keliling
His newest release, Keliling, brings a fresh energy, featuring a Pharrell-esque instrumental full of 2000s neo-soul/R&B bounce, complemented by vocals delivered in a style reminiscent of Musiq Soulchild.
Stay tuned as we dive deeper into Farrel’s work in the first issue of our magazine this April.
